voip.ms “upgrades” block G.722, removal of allow all codecs

Filed under: BULLSHIT — Sagacious Himself @ 5:11 am

Voip.ms restricts clients to non-HD codecs specially a mere three codecs now:

voip.ms officially disallows G.722 by removing Allow ALL codec option

G.711, G.729a, gsm

Which G.729 extensions you might wonder as G.729a is not specific enough… continue wondering about that and voip.ms HD suicide.

anveo.com continues to support G.722 (from starter package up)

ONLY ONE voip.ms upgrade outshines anveo:   TCP registration

yes, anveo offered SIP TCP long before but voip.ms has made SIP TCP available to ALL voip.ms clients.  Anveo requires a cost ineffective “Starter” service level for SIP TCP and G.722.  Low volume users need weigh the ~$8/mo cost for these two features.  This decision is made simpler by voip.ms abandoning G.722 (or not embracing any wide-band codec).  Remember:

  • anveo does not proffer free incoming SIP nor free outgoing SIP.
  • anveo provides free SIP alerts to all packages so there’s no reason to constrain SMS by SIP to starter and above
  • voipMS does provide free incoming SIP and free outgoing SIP, but they artificially limit accounts to one iNum citing imaginary voxbone policy, and some routing features “require” purchasing a virtual DID (SIP URI based on account number) $0.25/mo + $0.001/min
  • Vitelity.com unlimited [inbound] calling starts at ~$8/mo  (or better with PiaF signup gateway)
  • Vitelity also has a payg model alt to 8/mo

It would be foolish (or stupid) to use voip with tiny-band ISP…. so CEASE PANDERING to the cheap and offer more wide-band codecs.   The CHEAP will remain CHEAP.  (hint: they’ll not spend [much] money on services)

VZW prepaid daily not a bargain if using recycled numbers

VZW prepaid daily seems like a good plan for CL or other cloak and dagger operations.  However “new” activations are issued heavily abused numbers from a small recycled pool 😦

$2/day prepaid quickly loses value when DebtCollectorLucifer calls for Bob Smith from several different obviously spoofed numbers several times per day.

fortunately TXT is not billed until opened.  And much akin to TracFone some VZW non-sim prepaid phones offer better TXT windows if you’re not outright blocking TXT.  Combine with voip sms to sip/xmpp/fwd for less poor results.

mobile carrier really REALLY OUGHT to provide customers server side PBX finesse powers for TXT- and call filtration!

provide a better number with the GOTCHA that VZW policy prevents incoming calls during port-in process!!

If you need a phone and need inbound calling now you DON’T WANT VERIZON WIRELESS directly; you want a VZW MNVO like TracFone, StriaghtTalk, etc who allow incoming calls during port-in process

FreedomPop free 4g is free except for the fees and evil billing practices

edit topical: solution alternative

Are you considering a secondary/portable internets access for entertainment  elsewhere?  Consider instead SickBeard as ethical usenet.  This will allow you to eliminate the cost of DVR rental at home leaving your funds to purchase LTE bandwidth while still reducing monthly  spending overall.  Do NOT enter into a contract with sprint/clear.  If clear/sprint only use Pay As You Go (if they require your social security number or the last four digits or openly declare the need for a ‘soft credit check’ you are being entered into the contractual relationship you need AVOID.).  To employ usenet ethically you must pay/license your tv/movie content through your ISP/satellite/other  amazon/netflix.  If you download from usenet without just compensation to content producers you will be ethically/legally guilty of piracy (depriving others of just wages).  You can ethically download programs from  ‘air channels’ or those you can receive with merely a tv and hd antenna when currently airing and within a few weeks of airing. Easily watch on TV device via xbmc or openelc on either root’d amazon fireTV or low cost RaspberryPi.

edit 2014:

“free”dompop has made no effort to refute these claims [here].  They have spent a pretty penny hiring web PR drones to spew hype at times “article” comments — which apparently is bean counter less costly than an ethical policy change.  Some of the cost landmines are rectified some of the time IFF customer spends inordinate time to resolve.  “free”dompop abuse will continue as only those whose time is worth little will pursue the interaction — and foolishly not in writing (on paper).  Try returning your “leased” device for a refund if for no other purpose than to new it up.  Are you charged the undisclosed $9 return processing fee?

https://www.freedompop.com/service_plan_terms.htm

“free” device with $50 or $90 refundable deposit after $5 shipping less undisclosed $8.95 return fee.

free until it’s NOT-free:

Deposit refund is time limited after which the loan becomes a purchase.

Free monthly service provides 399 megs of transfer in a 30 day cycle

once you hit 100 megs short of your monthly allowance (500 megs) “for your convenience” freedompop will charge a minimum top-up of $10.   If your prepaid credit drops to $2 you will be charged another $10 top-up.  Exceeding 500 megs per month incurs a cost per meg.

Another evil gotcha:  if in your monthly “free” cycle you do not consume 5 megs you will be charged a $0.99 penalty to remain an active client

To remain a FREE user you must use at least 5 megs EVERY month AND NOT more than 399 megs per month.  Account reactivation penalty is $20.  To avoid any fees AND recoup deposit one must send written on paper notice of cancellation.

If you violate any third party terms which are NOT available for viewing your account might be canceled and you agree to forfeit your device deposit.  Sounds like a microsoft eula sight unseen.  The same applies to freepop terms in the paypal “sole arbiter of truth” sense.

You may opt-in to extra-spam or privacy-rape third party offers for minuscule bandwidth bonuses.  You are required to provide a valid email to receive volumes of freedompop spam.  freedompop collects a phone number in the name of fedex.

apparently freedompop users can communicate with one another via the 4g network. hmmmm

Top-up balderdash applies to pre-paid accounts as does minimum usage penalties.

I will be taking extra unmentionable precautions when I signup in a coverage area.

Please remember to send written opt-out of binding arbitration within first 30 days of signup!

You agree to allow FreedomPop to stalk you upon login to any “social” site according to their “privacy” rape policy https://www.freedompop.com/privacy.htm

In the acceptable use policy you agree that in the relationship only freedompop may abuse your privacy, endanger your security, send spam, perpetrate fraud, mislead others, engage in “deceptive advertising or [deceptive] communication”, collect personal information of others.

For example FreedomPop explicitly claims that there are no caps or throttling but in the above acceptable use policy: “will monitor both overall network performance and individual resource consumption to determine if any user is consuming a disproportionate amount of available resources… [reserve the right to throttle or cap]”.  Which seems especially odd for a company that charges per meg overage penalties.  FreedomPop will use the phone number they collected “only for fedex” to call you during such operations.

If you are unavailable or do not respond to FreedomPop’s attempt to contact you regarding excessive use, or if excessive use is ongoing or recurring and repeatedly having negative effects on other subscribers of the Services, then FreedomPop reserves the right to immediately restrict, suspend or terminate your access to the Broadband Service (and/or other applicable Services) without further notice

Despite your use of a $90, 8 party, FreedomPop wifi device you may not

sell, provision, resell, rent, lend, pledge, transfer, distribute or exploit any portion of the Services or Equipment without FreedomPop’s prior written consent in each instance.

When otherwise is not an illicitly obtained phone number what is it?

When feasible, upon observation of a violation of this AUP, FreedomPop may attempt to contact you by e-mail at the e-mail address you have provided to us or otherwise to notify you of the violation

it’s free: simply give them money,  and operate amid a penalty minefield. Terms are subject to nefarious changes especially materially to financially benefit freedompop at your perilous expense.  FreedomPop seems evil.

For a similarly evil experience (with a non-refundable lower mifi fee plus outrageous “shipping” fee) consider suffering at the hands of Netzero 4g. Free netzero is 200 megs. Amusingly netzero “requires” you not MAC spoof or alter device unique identifier.  hahaha riiight PDroid XPosed framework with XPrivacy.  Netzero requires completion of third party “offers” and spam generating “opt” in activities.

If you must have mifi or 4g contract directly with ClearWire via clear.com or via an ethical reseller (not “freedom”pop). [[ClearWire now owned by Sprint]]

Mental self-defense is also necessary. Although not subject to direct physical harm like the body, viruses propagate through the mind in much the same way as they do through the body. Although many of these viruses are beneficial- cooperation, freedom, rule of law, democracy — many of them are actively harmful. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, ad infinitum separate us from those who may otherwise have offered us valuable tools in our struggle for survival- even if we don’t personally engage in those behaviors ourselves. Although they are not physical, ideas have very real effects in our daily lives. It behooves us to study which ideas promote survival, individually and collectively, and which ideas prevent our survival, and act accordingly.

verizon wireless prepaid GOTCHAS with LNP

Tags: , ,

If you’re planning to port-in a number to your verizon wireless prepaid (non-sim) device

  • do NOT activate it
  • FIRST initiate the port-in process
    • VZW will collect: MEIN, current MDN (uh oh catch 22), account password (uh oh catch 22),
  • ideally: wait for the port department to call you with competition notification
  • *22899 to [re]activate new VZW account profile to device

.

OBSCENE VZW prepaid GOTCHA:

  • during the prepaid port-in you CANNOT receive calls on the handset
  • VZW cancels the current MDN and immediately assigns the port-in as MDN *prior* to port-in completion
  • VZW claims minutes cannot be transferred between devices
  • minutes on current MDN will be FOREVER LOST when MDN is cancelled

other MVNO of VZW do not have this ultra retarded policy: they want you to spend your incoming minutes.

  • Port-in to TracPhone (on verizon): keep existing number until *228 pushes port-in MDN.
  • Port-in to StraightTalk (on verizon): keep existing number [MDN] until *228 pushes port-in MDN.

.

What should happen on prepaid should match VZW MNVO and VZW contract:

  • profile created with port-in MDN and pushed through activation (*228) AFTER port-in completes
  • allow one to receive calls at original MDN during port-in process
    • allows subscriber to forward all calls from port-in number to current number for a SEAMLESS transition from the perspective of callers
  • properly handle RDNIS information

.

Attaching minutes the MDN is obviously FOOLISH.  The MIN would be better suited allowing a minute share between current- and would-be MDN.  There are other VZW tools available to help verizon customers spend money on verizon services during the port-in process.

.

VZW agents additional DAILY prepaid silly claims (read as: FALSEhoods):

  • only charged for calls answered by- or initiated from handset
    • not charged for calls dumped into voicemail
    • not charged for calls answered by NoAnswer-Busy-Forwarding line
  • voicemail is deleted from account in 60 days if not setup

Privacy rape enabled by default?  That is soo unacceptable we need a whole new word to escape understatement.

Fortunately AdBlock Plus continues to be useful for content liberation research.  Still no stand alone XUL loopback proxy?

The tide in the android adblocking game is shifting in favor of privacy.

More elaborate local net filtering it is!  Oh the joy.  After epiphany I shall have some time to tinker.

“blocking ads harms free content”

really?  That tired argument.  It is obviously NOT free if the cost is privacy rape.  I HATE the promotion of android applications under the banner of free and the backhanded slap with adware flavor of malware.  Editing the APK is generally as trivial as blocking net connections.  A little more esoteric to deprive apps of reliable network state information.   The Spirit of Mozilla applied to android..

Blocking ads does not harm ANY free content or free software.  Blocking ads prevents one from being victimized by the heinously irrational defective business model syndrome.

“Respect my privacy”

is the second highest concern to the allow unobtrusive ads model.  Google privacy rape?  Ring any bells?  Take a few moments (or hours if you’re a bit slow) to consider how google profits. How does allowing google ads respect privacy?  (hint: it doesn’t)

Now I’ll get to produce a PDF flyer for distribution to “everyone” how to reclaim the privacy AdBlock Plus supposedly provides.  oh goodie!  Or maybe I’ll get to repackage the extension and distribute it.  Yes, license complaints.  How’d that work out for zottmann?

Allowed adp comment with less eloquent objection but interesting malware analogy.  This is exactly what google android market does: allow “acceptable” malware.

selling != not-selling

If it is free there is no cost.

If there is a cost it is not free.

Yes, Johnny, words have particular meaning. Profound umbrige is taken against abuse of “free” as it is libelous against the thousands of f/OSS developers.

Giving away product and whining that no one purchased it?  What is your definition for insanity?

Don’t want your content in the public sphere?  Don’t place your content in the public sphere!  How challenging is this?  (genius not required)

Do Not track FARCE

until the evils of fine grained Geo IP Location are addressed one would be equally well served creating a do not track post-it note and affixing it to one’s monitor in the hopes of compliance. disposable phone testing: TracFone good, cheap TracFones bad. (prepaid phones)

Filed under: bargain,Hardwares, overview, verizon sucks — Sagacious Himself @ 3:15 pm

I carry more than two mobile phones for a variety of reasons.  Taking any of them to a potentially wet environment is less than desirable.

Disposable phones to the rescue?  Which pre-paid phones suck the least?

First choice to test: TracFone.

It was inexpensive (and very cheap).  No per day cost for the privilege of having the phone activated.  Minutes do not expire, but the phone activation does.  Buy more minutes before activation window expires or the phone self destructs (becomes unusable).   $15 for the phone itself: LG420G.  $20 for a 60 pre-paid minutes code.  Apparently there was a promotion at the time of phone purchase:  All minutes, and future purchase minutes, are doubled.  Searching the interweb I found a five digit promo code for an additional 60 minutes.

$35 bought: a chintzy phone, 180 minutes, five months of activation, and a phone number in the zip code I specified during phone activation.  The phone activation has a few gotchas.  It prompts early for a five digit promo code.   Since I was unaware that such existed I had not interweb searched for one.  No problem, the IVR indicates promo entry can be deferred to the end of the call.  Unfortunately the IVR provides no opportunity to enter the promo code later.  One need call TracFone support, 800.867.7183, and endure half an hour of near musak before being routed to a live body in Singapore.

Now the worse-bad:

  •  lag. horrible audio lag for each call party.  Sometimes as poor as long as four seconds of lag
  •  audio drops.  With full signal audio drops: 30% or more of the conversation is lost to the ether.  The lower the signal strength the more audio is dropped
  •  echo.  horrible echo.   I did not expect fantastic audio fidelity from a $15 obviously refurbished phone.  However, a high quality blue tooth headset offers no improvement.  sound uptake, DAC, DSP, codec, signal transmission..  the latter three are apparently hugely problematic even with BT audio.
  • audio fidelity poor.  very very poor… even with high quality BT
  •  most SMS falls in a hole never to be seen

The phone would be great for 419 scambating as the phone delightfully  mangles audio and would frustrate scammers.  While I would almost be pleased if this phone were to get wet on a trip and die the audio-suck issues render it useless for using other than a pager.

The less than good:

  • SMS sending uses at least 0.5 minutes of air time.  More minute fractions for longer SMS
  • TracFone will not accept SIM from another SIM provider
  • BT profile has been verizon’d
  • BT audio device must be manually accepted each time powered
  • TracFone support claims one is charged for outgoing ringing
  • charged for incoming ringing WHEN phone rings for more than five minutes

The decent-good:

  • no id required to purchase
  • no credit card required
  • no volunteering of personal information required
  • zip code used to assign phone number
  • number can be ported out to ITSP for PBX joy
  • short SMS can be viewed at no charge with the inbox preview feature
  • no charge to *receive* SMS.  only charged to view or send SMS
  • not charged for outgoing ringing per se

the extremely-bad

  • when voicemail is removed the system, much like verizon, soonventually applies INANE defaults
  • inbound calls are routed to a “mobile user unavailable” error and disconnected after 25 seconds
  • this error should only apply when the TracFone is not powered
  • activation zipcode assigns both phone number AND provider.
  • For least pain do not use zip code to shop for an area code

Why remove voicemail?  Prior experience with pre-paid phones is that voicemail is used to extort additional payment.  Also I prefer the PBX features of asterisk to lametard mobile voicemail.  I provide people with my own DID and route to the disposable phone.  My PBX captures voicemail, filters call

the extremely-good

  • Customer Service agents at TracFone, very much unlike AT&T/verizon, care about helping users,
  • Customer Service agents at TracFone are infinitely patient, polite, and kind, and have better training than most every non-business agent at other carriers,
  • Time spent with CS is credited back to the TracFone balance

.

IMPORTANT: buy the mobile flavor for the area in which you will be calling/called… CDMA or GSM.  Got SIM? you have GSM.  The 4th and 5th digit of SIM serial indicates carrier: 12 for tmobile, 14 for att.  Use zip code to ensure CDMA, or AT&T.  It’s far too easy to inflict tmobile or cingular on yourself. Zip code prompt during activation is for number selection.

Use zipcodemap.net and tracfone availability to find desirable carrier and engineer tracfone to ship the correct SIM, or force them to display CDMA handsets.  Ship where ever else you like.  Do not rely on TrafFone to select the best mobile flavor for where you live; tracfone will default to the least cost technology where you live.

For least cost: best audio quality & best signal with AT&T use the motorola W376g [pdf]

IF you want a phone to perform other than calling features you really want an internet capable PDA aka “smart” “phone”.  SMS is gay.

Absolutely.  facebook will be so jealous

I look forward to unboxing a WRT54GS — happily retired in the garage — to provide the internets to my irksome obi110 near an analog phone as bringing an analog phone to obi110 will cause hours of reconfiguration joy once power is terminated.

When a firmware update is available

  • the internet device receives a communication
  • over the internet
  • from the internet service and shows a graphic in the internet device control panel

clue challenged?

Both obitalk and the obi110 are from the people who originally developed the wildly popular sipura ATAs.  This glaring oversight (*cough* laziness *cough*) is stunning.

Amazon selling privacy-rape? STOP allowing amazon abuse! Trade not privacy for cash. “discount” kindle is not a bargain and AdMash is more evil

Who is insane enough to “sell” their privacy for $25?

Twenty five WHOLE dollars off a kindle to tolerate malware? *

NO

NO

NOOO

Here’s how it works. AdMash will show you two different screensavers and then ask you to vote for the one you like best.

NEITHER!  I like zero ads.  I see zero ads.  I am certainly not paying to see ads! WTH

adservers are “privacy rape”.  That’s the best turn of phrase I’ve yet seen.

How many of the feckless  hoard will give [waste] their time helping the evil adservers craft eviler ads with Amazon AdMash?

A malware powered kindle ought be ZERO out of pocket cost AND CONTINUE paying the user at the very least for the high privacy loss cost. AND in n-ambiguous terms should explain the actual cost of using such evil software

No statement on privacy assurance?  even on not voting tablets?

Where’s the “I changed my mind here’s twenty five dollars turn off this evil amazon crapware” option?

Amazon giving away “free” software?  That’s incentivising DRM installation.  And a secure platform too.  Why it was minutes before that aviary genocide rio game was cracked, liberated of its drm wrapper.  DRM encourages piracy and amuses crackers.  My android device has few drm teeth not kicked in and those remaining bite nothing.  I sync my life through exchange and tinker with funambol.  I don’t trust ad purveyors with my privacy: I don’t trust google and now I have reason to distrust amazon who has so well served me as a retailer.

[insert SIP call me widget here]

too bad wp hosted blogs are widget hostile.  Let’s have a wp wrapper for sip call widgets!

verizon wireless “cramming”: arbitrarily applied private address space policy

Filed under: fraudulent enticement,Righteous Rage,verizon sucks — Sagacious Himself @ 11:32 am

Forcing customers to accept charges for services not provided but for which they are billed is termed “cramming” in the telecommunications industry.

I pay for unlimited 3G data.  I receive something other than 3G as defined by my contract.  Verizon wireless proffers 3G as voip capable.  As demonstrated this private address space savaged network configuration is at best voip-hostile.

.

verizon wireless issuing private ip addresses to 3g customer, NAT joy, MIA packets and gross ineptitude … fraudulent enticement

fraudulent enticement” : is the phrase for those pitching class action suits to such law firms.

.

Part 2, draft 1

verizon staff, even senior tech staff [not network], cannot seem to understand that “private:public” is ONE distinction of ip addresses and that “dynamic:static” is another distinction.  Several people now have approached verizon wireless with the problem that their handset, the phone itself, is receiving a private ip address instead as before a public ip address (internet ip address, or public routable, or insert colloquialism here) on the 3g ppp0 interface.  The joy for “smart” phone users is Port Restricted Cone NAT.  It is a great way to break voip and vpn functionality of the device.  NAT per se is not the issue; user non-configurable “feature” is the problem.  Additional complexity is introduced by VZW denying addressing scheme.

10.0.0.0/8 (255.0.0.0)

Not sure you and your mobile station are in this private address space wan facing boat?  IF android: Grab “STUN client” application, pick any functional STUN server from the drop down, and perform the test.  At the bottom of the results will be the name of your 3g interface, in my case ppp0, and the associated ip address, in my case 10.n.155.n

STUN client: appbrain: http://www.appbrain.com/app/stun-client/com.kodholken.stunclient  I can provide the apk if you have opted to disable google “features” by not adding a gmail address to your handset.

The comical troubleshooting one must initially endure is the assertion that if the web browser is working the data network is working perfectly.  Out of order packets don’t noticeably affect web browsers; out of order packets are very bad for voip.  Lost packets aren’t bad for TCP web browsers; Lost packets are very bad for UDP voip conversations.

“The [3g] ip address on the phone is ONLY for talking to our towers”

Oh really? **  Wait it gets better:

“[3g ip addresses are] not for talking to third party services on the internet”

yes, verizon really made that delightful claim.

“are you saying I’m stupid?” No, based on the call recording I heard this guy is clearly grossly ignorant and not suited to a network support department.

“If the data isn’t working it’s the third party software you’re using”

great!
‘software can control your side of the network? please walk me through how I access that manually’

‘if web pages are timing out is it the fault of the web browser?’  .. “no” .. distinction failure continues

Various analogies are drawn to soho nat…

“you have to understand your ip address is dynamic” ..

uh huh. what’s that to do with it now being private address space and the evil of network address translation whereas recently the 3g interface was _dynamically_ issued from a public address space?

Let’s compare the dhcp class of this handset with the dhcp class of another handset.  Awkward silence.  Even their unassailable network people don’t have access to this information.  Scary.

“you might need to create a new rule in your corporate firewall”

How does that effect my phone?  There is nothing I control between my handset and the tower.  I’m not even using a rooted phone with a software firewall with this issue.

We all commiserate there is little point pushing this issue up the food chain by voice with non-business class accounts… especially with the appalling terminology dearth and concept fail.

Stuck with a private ip address?  Too bad.  Suffer but please continue to pay us.

All silly suggestions to contact the manufacturer of the phone, or the developer of VoIP product x or y ought be ignored.  The manufacturer of a handset that speaks CDMA (or lte), for verizon wireless, will direct all questions pertaining to the network back to verizon.  The software is not relevant to this issue — it merely MANIFESTS (or indicates) that there is an issue, and if you are voip familiar you recognize quickly the flavor of NAT involved.

“Perhaps you should contact google”

Yeah, that’ll work out so well.  Sadly no longer employed by a multinational, multibillion dollar venture group I don’t wield that kind of power any more, so no thanks I’ll try bashing your head against the wall instead.  It’s nice to have memories of seeing microsoft, [phone co], and intel dance to make me happy.. I mean work to find a solution to a problem with stuff.

Expect VoIP to FAIL and FAIL BADLY.  There’s a reasonable chance of VPN pain in your near future.  But at least your browser works, right?

It may be a secret top down plan to sell static ip addresses as that has been repeatedly suggested as a ‘solution’.

Please share your verizon wireless fun [pain].  I have several phone conversations from several people in my allegedly small boat in WAV — VoIP allows call recording for claim consistency purposes.  Consider capturing all your CS phone calls; it’s easy with viatalk (roll your own asterisk people have a few buttons to mash).

.

See post on “google port-OUT .. revisionist history” for voip/itsp recommendations.  Also consider PIAF vitelity endorsement.  Additionally try TLS nightlies of CSIPsimple.  Howardforums has luminaries worth consulting.

** Although it could be an unqualified  reference to pg 5 of VZW document b2b.vzw.com/assets/files/PrivateNetwork_WP.pdf [Verizon Wireless Private Network whitepaper] — section 3.1 grasps the public:private and dynamic:static distinctions. A static IP address is available without having a business account. Section 3.8: “static IP — verizon wireless hosted” as opposed to “static IP — verizon business hosted” makes further distinctions. Dynamic Mobile Network Routing exchanges tower-calls for voip calls.  Any claim by Verizon Wireless that a static IP address [on non-business account] would cost $500 reveals gross ineptitude by the agent.  It is obvious that the agent is phrase searching and landed on section 3.8 “verizon wireless private network setup fee”.  There are a number of circumventions to verizon wireless [tortial interference] ranging from irksome to vexatious.. but VZW provoked Proof of Concept circumvention necessity.

PhantomAlert.com farce: pay to work for phantom alert, bait and switch marketing language, oh my another “smart” phone scam? (phantomalert review: avoid)

You want me to add to- and verify your database AND charge me? no.

http://www.phantomalert.com/Free-Download-Page/Download-Page.html

Pay $10/month at least for the privilege of contributing to the accuracy of the phantomalert database is a privilege I need not.  Better model for me is a PGP signed trust model: the better the contributor the more time-accurate the database one may download freely.

.

If I am to subscribe to a payment model I expect FAR better than casual community contributions to a nebulous database with VERY little intelligence applied to design.

.

How the phantomalert marketing scam works:

“drivers and spotters report speed traps..on our website.  Then drivers simply download our .. database in to [sic] their GPS” …

.

What?  No mention of paying to work for phantomalert?

“you could be making singles of dollars [scamming friends with craig’s list and ebay]” — review

All the while RadarDroid Pro becoming less and less appealing.

waze, social gps navigation, actual-freeware, integrates speed trap reporting with self expiration.  PhantomAlert database continues to stagnate.   http://m.waze.com  to download latest client without [android] market.

(As android market continues to decay from MALWARE speciously claiming to be freeware the iphone platform becomes more appealing. )

Verizon Wireless survey drones call from 505 999 5100 in response to ZERO likelihood of recommending to friends

Filed under: All Your Base,BULLSHIT,verizon sucks — Sagacious Himself @ 10:51 am

After rating them zero on a scale of zero to ten(best) on “how likely are you to refer verizon wireless to your friends” I qualified my in regards to their “3g” offering.

oh, you didn’t notice your “unlimited” “3g” drizzling about the speed of an analog modem?  Verizon likes your kind: pay for service you never use or suffer hegemony.

Verizon Wireless lost a class action over use of the BlueTooth logo in the v710 phone and not actually supporting bluetooth profiles represented by that logo.  I expect them to lose another over either claim of “unlimited” or “3g”.  Much as with netflix I could not care less about verizon’s other customers.  MY contract for service is with verizon.  I grudgingly pay the thirty dollar monthly extortion and expect that.. surprisingly yes.

Up until now I haven’t bothered modifying the phone as I had done with every other handset.  At the very least I couldn’t stand the word ‘verizon’ on the lcd.

But not-subtle throttling of bandwidth to the handset per se is unacceptable.  Verizon has the audacity to want another $30/mo to use the handset as an AP, another $30/mo to use the handset as a tethered modem [+$60/mo], and yet another $30/mo to send/receive unlimited SMS [+$90/mo for the math impaired].  The SMS is the most galling as powering the phone uses more “data” than a “page” of SMS.  SMS doesn’t use 3G… and is an infinitesimal impact on network resources.  Thirty dollars?  Are you high?  Thanks, no, I’ll use xmpp; it’s as instant and preserves sender time stamp very much unlike sms queuing.  Pix n Flix from an HD camera handset is very gay: all HD pixels are raped through the media server.  It’s a brilliant plan:

safeguard the network from SMS and pix/flix messaging to force people to use “3G” resources and then punish them for using “3G” by throttling the connection to pre interweb non-circuit speeds

Tmobile renegade they are is offering unlimited data/sms/ap/tethering for $9/mo that would cost $120/mo for verizon wireless users.  Hmmm.  At home I have [symmetric] OC1 speeds. yay.  I like the speed.  My US Robotics Courier I-modem provided more bandwidth than my allegedly “3G” “smart” handset

Which custom ROM would make the DroidX happiest?  Obviously it’s foolish to leave to phone in rooted state.  Root+ROM will allow nuking of verizon bloatware and the other way to nuke adware –– although if the application developer is intellectually dishonest and morally impared to foist adware as freeware there’s no telling how else he may deem appropriate to abuse hardware to exploit users for his gain. Adblocking is a must have.. at least until there in non-dev non-root user control of application permissions.  See AOSP bugs and star them (at least once):

that’s ok.  A “tenant” independantly subscribed to another residential package.  oh, look, I have 2 IPA now and so much less expensive than imbecilic “upgrade” to a business account I don’t need.

Windows 7 is enough to kill itself on the desktop

Ignore the misanthropic fanboi article but heed the DRM-, resource-, security-, and cost  comments

http://theinquirer.net/inquirer/review/392/1050392/windows-7-is-enough-to-kill-linux-on-the-desktop

.

(1)

Although I have enjoyed the bashing of MS for the last 2 years due to Vista, it did actually have real problems. 1. The OS was built around DRM which puts the the user thirds to MS and the movie companies. 2. They wanted to improve the ‘running as admin’ problem, but they didn’t have the guts to actually make normal users in to non-admin users. Have either of these things changed? — Felix

(2)

it still suffers from: * Very high RAM usage (about 2/3 that of Vista) * Heavy UI requirements (and no classic start bar now) * Heavy handed usage of DRM * Lack of device support (as bad as Vista) * Unknown cost (although Microsoft need to support their staff with this) * IE8 is an abysmal web browser The bottom line is that Windows 7 is based on the Vista core (with slightly more polish) but is still horrendously memory hungry, GPU intensive, (probably) expensive and the same quality control that we have come to expect from Microsoft 😉 Don’t forget also that Microsoft is planning to move over to a software-as-a-subscription model (so you will have to PAY every year to keep your PC working). No thanks! – John Cockroft

(3)

You make the bold claim, “Windows 7 is enough to kill Linux on the desktop” without substantaiting it. No benchmarks, no stabiity tests, no feature comparisons. People have been cheated by M$ for decades. All anyone wants is a stable system that provides a GUI and high-level access to hardware for applications. Instead, we have gigabytes of garbage on our hard disks and in our RAM. Since M$ are know to have been selling a proven failure (Vista), would it not be reasonable to wait until Windows 7 ships then do a soak test then compare it with Linux and OSX? – Wendy

(4)

you still can’t beat the price [of linux]. The only reasons Windows exists is because everyone is forced to buy it on pre-builts…it has been a peice of …. for years and anyone with technical knowledge knew that, but unlike other industries (due to monopoly) it rained supreme. Lastly I have no idea why it has advantages for open source?? I develop open source and 90+% of my tools are built in (and originate on) to linux. … MS will still hide all the functionality from users since they consider the average joe … dumb … which is especially horrible for power users…. The security flaws in the system have never been truly addressed since it is a basic flaw in Windows oversized kernel which places too many things inside the root-area. That can only be fixed with a major rewrite…but why would MS do that when all people care about is the look-n-feel (plus that is comes on the computer when they buy it…no choice).  — boom

(5)

any good intentioned soul sitting down to read this article might actually believe that it is written by the Linux fan who is re-evaluating his decision to run Linux instead of a MS product. Why? Because Windows 7 BETA is just that good right? No. Because like so many MS Fanboys, he is a farce, long on words, but short on evidence. As has been stated before, there is no evidence in this article to support the author’s claims. Anyone who would attempt a test between a BETA product and an established product expecting the results to be certifiable is obviously living in LaLa land anyways – I know more

(6)

Windows is a convenient OS for training monkeys to eventually type Shakespeare. I won’t be switching back to Windows until they develop an OS that: Respects that I am smart enough to want to do what I say I want, not just the most popular options. Doesn’t give every third-party script the right to run as admin (security shouldn’t depend on only the AV and firewall, kids.) Doesn’t spy on me, doesn’t get all Big Brother on me (yes, I made that DVD myself I don’t need DRM blocking me), and doesn’t try to do ANYTHING behind my back, even if I haven’t chosen to upgrade something. Adheres to standards, rather than developing a new and special (ed) version of them. Once the Vole decided he had invented the English language and could sell it, what chance was there for true compatibility in anything? – DanF

(7)

What the final verdict is, am I willing to spend another few hundred bucks everytime Microsoft releases their latest and greatest. That answer is absolutely not. What if i wanna buy a new CPU, and use the same version of Windows that I have, not allowed to ?!?! Surely, I purchased this product, just months ago, and now I am not legally allowed to run it on my machine because of a CPU failure, which resulted in the purchase of a new chip. I will though be able to continue to use my existing version of whichever flavor of Linux I choose to, and for free, no matter what kind of hardware changes I make, or how many installs I do… – [yay todd]

(8)

Windows 7 is nothing but Vista with a new taskbar (oOOooh!) and with the constant nagging/permissions fixed ! Ever since the announcement of the beta release, I’ve been trying to find more documentation on the new features…. and guess what, this is what I found ! No new micro-kernel, no new filesystem, no fancy backup system… NOTHING ! Oh wait… I forgot the part where the windows become transparent except for the ouline. My bad. Pretty impressive indeed – G

(9)

Windows 7, like all Windows products, will be very expensive. Normal security won’t work on it (McAfee products don’t work on it currently). You will have to buy updates for every bit of software and hardware so that they can be compatible with Windows 7. Then, as with Vista, you will have to slowly discover which components Microsoft has decided to take out, limit, or restrict from your one of 18 different versions of Windows 7 — Home Ghetto Version, Home Middle Class version, Home Lake Washington Version Small Business Entrepeneur Version, Small Business Wannabe Version, Small Business Crippled Server Version, and Small Business with Microsoft Bank Account version Media Center Compuserve version, Media Center AOL version, Media Center AOL-with-limited-crapware version, Media Center with the usual Linux open source freeware included (top of the line) Then there will be the Windows 7 Ultimate version, called “Windows 7 cloud 9 version” — allows you to virtualize Linux (and Apple, too!) so you can run all those free open source Linux programs and forget that you’re running Windows! All you need is a 4 Terabyte RAM machine, with 160 Pentabyte hardrive for the Windows OS (with 10 Gb reserved for Linux). The Windows 7 logo is a really, really fat woman singing. – moose

(10)

If this is a honeypot for flames…..then congrats – it wins. I too downloaded Windows 7 and stuck it on a dual core box, 3GB RAM and a fast SATA drive graphics card etc. It is an absolute dog. ….. Once again Microshaft have gone for the ‘fluffy look’ way of thinking which hogs resources like you would not believe. For me to have it just sitting there doing (literally) nothing took 800Mb of RAM – nothing in the list of processes but just ‘I am using 800Mb of RAM so there’. As with Vista, all they have done is move stuff around so that you spend time looking for it and still then cannot find it. To suggest this is going to make people change their OS of choice is utter garbage. I will not be moving away from Ubuntu and Mac OS – I kind of like it where if an app hangs it doesn’t take the whole box with it, call me old fashioned if you will…. – SI

(11)

M$hite will never beat Linux, any flavour, because Linux is more then an OS, it’s a philosophy, a form of digital freedom where we are allowed to DO WHAT WE WANT with no sneaky M$hite being conducted behind our backs. I saw the keynote speach on 7 and the only thing they could highlight was the new task bar, which is Apples, and the ability to create a media network, which has been possible for YEARS. Anyway, to summarise Win7 – a gold plated turd is still a turd. – MRU

(12)

Are you retarded? Yeah, our company with over 3000 pc’s is going to upgrade from XP to Win 7 by replacing every PC since they only have 512 Meg of RAM. We are going to go through “Driver Hell” with all our legacy printers. For what? Everything we have works fine. What is the draw to Win 7? Nothing. Since our apps work, why should we care about replacing an OS that is solid for our desktop needs. Anything that is important to us is on UNIX.- kronosmen

(13)

Got DRM?  No sale! MAC is abandoning DRM even in iTunes. Will microsoft abandon draconian abuse of users at the home desktop? No? Then no sale. Will microsoft develop a 64bit OS and abandon the x86 legacy? no? then no sale. Media piracy is already illegal. Making it illegal will not stop those who opt to be soft pirates. More causal users are being more media savvy. Windows 7: defective by design. Microsoft draconia will sink microsoft sales
